How Long Does a Dental Lab Take? Turnaround for Crowns, Implants and All-on-X

At ArtyCad, crowns and bridges take up to 5 business days, implant restorations 7–10 business days, and All-on-X cases up to two weeks, depending on the case. The days count from the moment the complete case reaches the lab: scans or impressions, the prescription and every detail the design depends on. Turnaround is the same for offices in New York City, New Jersey and every other state.

Key takeaways

  • A missing bite, shade or implant detail holds the case until it arrives.
  • Digital cases skip shipping days; boxes from outside New York and New Jersey add UPS transit.
  • A rush date is agreed with the lab before the case is sent.

When does the turnaround clock start?

On the day the lab has everything it needs to design the restoration. For a digital case, that is the day the scans and the prescription arrive. For a physical case, it is the day the box with the impressions or models, the bite and the RX reaches Brooklyn.

What counts as complete depends on the work. A crown or bridge needs the preparation, opposing and bite scans, tooth numbers, shade and material. An implant crown adds the implant system, platform and scan body. A full arch needs verified implant positions, multi-unit abutment details, bite, vertical dimension, photos and the final material.

Why do implant restorations take longer than crowns?

Illustration: the more parts a restoration has, the longer it stays in the lab.

An implant crown has more than one part. It sits on a Ti-base or on a custom abutment, chosen per case, over original manufacturer components for the implant system. A custom abutment is designed around the implant position, the tissue contour and the final crown, and titanium abutments are milled in-house. That second part, and its fit to both the implant and the crown, is what the extra days are for. Ti-base or custom abutment explains which one a case needs.

Why can All-on-X take up to two weeks?

A full-arch bridge replaces a whole arch and has to seat passively on every implant at once, so it is designed from verified implant positions rather than from a single tooth. When the bridge sits on a titanium bar, the bar is designed and milled in-house, so the case never waits for an outside milling center. Titanium bar or multi-unit compares the two designs.

A prototype often comes first, to check esthetics, bite, hygiene access and the patient's approval before the final bridge is made. Plan that try-in into the patient's schedule.

What delays a case?

Missing records: a bite that was not scanned, a front-tooth shade with no photos, an implant system named without its platform or scan body, a margin that cannot be read on the scan. The lab asks the office for the missing piece, and the business days start once it arrives.

Can a case be rushed?

Yes. Rush service costs $50 per unit. Call or email the lab before you send the case, so the date is confirmed before anyone plans around it.

Does shipping add time?

Not for digital cases. iTero (lab ID 252637) and 3Shape send straight to the lab, and any other scanner can upload STL files. In New York City and New Jersey, the PDS courier picks up and delivers cases free. From other states, a prepaid UPS label covers the trip to Brooklyn: count the days the box spends with UPS before the lab days begin.
